Frequently Asked Questions
Planning your walk
Practical answers for walkers planning the Yorkshire Wolds Way from Hessle to Filey. For further help, use the contact form.
How long is the Yorkshire Wolds Way?
The Yorkshire Wolds Way is a National Trail of about 79 miles (127 km), running from Hessle on the Humber estuary to Filey Brigg on the North Yorkshire coast.
How many days does it take to walk?
Most walkers allow 5 to 6 days so they can enjoy the landscape at a comfortable pace. Fitter walkers sometimes cover it in 4 days, while a more leisurely itinerary of 7 days or more is also common.
Which direction should I walk - Hessle to Filey or Filey to Hessle?
Traditionally the trail is walked south to north, from Hessle to Filey. Walking the other way is equally valid and can help with accommodation availability in busy seasons.
How difficult is the trail?
The Wolds Way is generally considered one of the gentler National Trails. Expect rolling chalk hills, dry valleys and farm tracks rather than high mountains, though there is still significant cumulative ascent over the full distance.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
Yes. Accommodation is limited in some quieter stretches of the Wolds, especially in May and through the summer. Book ahead, and consider mid-week starts if you are walking in peak season.
What maps and guidebooks should I carry?
Ordnance Survey Explorer maps 293, 294, 300 and 301 cover the route at 1:25,000. The official National Trail guidebook includes strip maps and stage descriptions and is strongly recommended alongside paper OS sheets.
Is the path waymarked?
Yes. The Yorkshire Wolds Way is waymarked with the National Trail acorn symbol. Waymarks are generally reliable, but a map and compass (or GPS) remain essential in poor visibility or where field boundaries change.
Can I get to the start and finish by public transport?
Hessle has rail links via Hull, and Filey has its own station on the coastal line. Buses also serve towns and villages near the trail, making a one-way through-walk straightforward to arrange.
Are dogs allowed on the Yorkshire Wolds Way?
Dogs are welcome on much of the trail but must be kept under close control, especially around livestock. Always check individual accommodation and landowner rules, and be prepared for stiles and busy farm tracks.
When is the best time of year to walk?
Late spring through early autumn offers the longest days and usually the driest paths. Summer is popular, so book early. Winter walking is possible for experienced hikers, but expect mud, shorter daylight and fewer open services.
